The news from Motion City Soundtrack today is quite a mixed bag. Due to lingering power outages from Hurricane Sandy, the hard-blowing Twin Cities pop/rock quintet had to postpone its show scheduled Saturday at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, N.J. However, the fellas are going ahead with tonight's concert at one of New York's most famous venues, Irving Plaza (in hard-hit lower Manhattan).
The other big motion in MCS land today is the release of the group's "Making Moves" 7-inch single. Theirs is the final installment in a series of singles that the band members produced for their own label, Boombox Generation -- produced with help from Drexel University's music program. Other bands curated for the series were The Company We Keep, Brick + Mortar, A Great Big Pile of Leaves, Goldrush and the Skies Revolt. All of the singles will be packaged as a boxed set. MCS's own single includes two new songs, "Severance" and "Major Leagues," plus a bonus cover of Rilo Kiley's "Pictures of Success" comes with the digital sales. RollingStone.com premiered "Major Leagues" a few weeks ago, and you can now stream all three of the new songs via the AOL Music Listening Party page.
Motion City will return home to the Varsity Theater on Nov. 18 (a show long since sold out). That puts a wrap on a steady half-year of touring that started with the June release of their fifth album, "Go." Not sure if I'd call it their best record overall, but it boasts several songs that I would put on their top shelf, especially "Timelines" (posted below).
By the way, one of Motion City's two openers on the current tour is fellow Twin Citians Now, Now, who are hanging around New York until Wednesday night to perform on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon."
