More than you know

More than you know Mr. Tidbit is always ready to try something new, even when he's pretty sure he'll be disappointed. So he happily reached into the freezer case for one of Stouffer's three new Corner Bistro Stuffed Melt and Soup combinations (in this case, a steak and Swiss melt with broccoli Cheddar soup).

He was intrigued that the box was only 11/4 inches thick: What kind of soup bowl would fit in that box? A very shallow one, of course. In fact, it's a small plastic bowl about 41/2 inches across and filled to a depth of about 5/8 of an inch.

That amounts to about 2/3 of a cup of soup, somewhat less than Mr. Tidbit would have said was a normal serving, but more than he thought the little bowl actually held.

The same could be said for what Mr. Tidbit would have called a miniature sandwich: The "stuffed melt" was just 31/2 inches square and weighed a startlingly light 4 ounces.

Mr. Tidbit was startled again when he measured a piece of ordinary bread and found it was only about 25 percent larger. And although the "melt" weighed only 4 ounces, the crust was pretty thin, so it contained a surprisingly decent amount of a rather liquid steak and Swiss filling.

All told, it was considerably more than Mr. Tidbit expected -- but he still wouldn't cross the street to have another one.

Let them eat waffles It's clear from the package of Smucker's new frozen Snack'n Waffles that they are very different from Eggo frozen waffles. The Eggo box contains 10 waffles weighing about 11/4 ounces each; the box of Snack'n Waffles is about two-thirds that size but contains only four 2-ounce waffles.

So Snack'n Waffles are much thicker and heavier than Eggo waffles, but that's not the main difference. That is Snack'n Waffles' texture: It's certainly not waffle-like. More like pound cake. Off-putting if you were expecting a waffle, but possibly not bad if you were expecting waffle-shape pound cake.
