More signage added at MOA ramp following fatal accident

More height restriction signs have been added to a parking ramp at the Mall of America after a driver was killed when his truck hit part of the ramp earlier this month.

Raheem Waheed, 52, died Aug. 3 after he drove a U-Haul truck into an area of the west lot that was too low for the vehicle. Just inside the entrance, he struck a concrete-and-steel support beam, which fell and crushed the cab. Waheed died at the scene. Two others in the truck were injured.

The truck had passed under a hanging device intended to alert drivers to the 7-foot height limit.

The extra signs, which began going up last weekend, were added as "an extra precautionary measure for the future," said mall spokesman Bridget Jewell.

The north entrance to the west parking deck had been closed for more than a week after the accident while crews made repairs.
