More protection for high school coaches?
The bill: Adds one sentence to the statute on contract renewals: "The existence of parent complaints must not be the sole reason for a board to not renew a coaching contract.''
Reaction: Supporters believe it will provide more protection for coaches who can be fired at will. Critics say it will undermine the authority of school boards tasked with such contract decisions.
What's next: The measure is in the House omnibus bill that will be taken up by a House-Senate conference committee. There is no similar measure in the Senate omnibus bill.
