More roadwork this weekend will shut down several highways in Twin Cities

Drivers also will find detours on Hwy. 5 in Eden Prairie and Hwy. 52 in St. Paul, according to MnDOT.

More major Twin Cities traffic arteries will be inaccessible this weekend, as the Minnesota Department of Transportation shuts down eastbound Interstate 694 in the north metro in the name of improving safety and mobility, spokesman Kent Barnard said.

Also closing is westbound I-94 and southbound I-35E in St. Paul

Eastbound lanes of I-694 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday between Shingle Creek Parkway in Brooklyn Center and Snelling Avenue in Arden Hills, with ramps along the 6-mile segment shutting down as early as 7 p.m. Friday.

During the work, eastbound motorists will be directed to head north on Hwy. 169 and then east on Hwys. 610 and 10 to return to I-694. Westbound traffic lanes will remain open.

Three weekends ago, MnDOT shut down westbound I-694 in the same area and enlisted the services of 151 employees and contractors who worked to complete “as many maintenance tasks as possible,” Barnard said.

Workers patched potholes and filled gaps in the concrete driving surface, repaired concrete median barriers and guardrails, sealed cracks on bridges and painted new stripes on the road.

Crews cleaned and inspected traffic cameras, removed graffiti and cleared drains. They collected 228 bags of trash and removed 42 dead or decaying trees, and new lights and signs that meet readability standards were installed.

“It’s a lot of hidden things that people don’t think about,” Barnard said. “It improves safety and mobility.”

Crews also were able to complete survey measurements and soil boring. Without the July 11-13 closure, there would have been a week of moving lane closures that could be equally disruptive, Barnard said.

The weekend work is meant to keep the freeway, which daily handles 125,000 to 155,000 vehicles, in good shape until it’s fully rebuilt in 2032.

Detours elsewhere

Detours also will be in place this weekend along Hwy. 5 in Eden Prairie and Hwy. 52 in downtown St. Paul.

Both directions of Hwy. 5 between Eden Prairie Road and Mitchell Road in Eden Prairie will be shut down from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Motorists will be detoured to Hwys. 212 and 41 to bypass the closure.

Hwy. 5 is already reduced to a single lane from Interstate 494 to Eden Prairie Road due to concrete rehabilitation work. The same is true for Hwy. 212, where work won’t wrap up until September, according to MnDOT.

In St. Paul, crews will close the northbound lanes of Hwy. 52 between Concord Street and Interstate 94 from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday while the pedestrian/bicycle bridge over the highway is taken down. Southbound lanes of Hwy. 52 will be closed from 1 to 5 a.m. Saturday, Barnard said. In the meantime, traffic will be detoured to I-494, Hwy. 61 and I-94.

The bridge, just north of Cesar Chavez/Concord Street, has been closed since June 2024, after the eastern end of the bridge was struck and damaged by a too-high load in the northbound lanes. Crews will rebuild a new section to match the existing structure and repaint the bridge, according to MnDOT.

Westbound I-94 will be shut down from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday from I-35E to Hwy. 280 due to bridge work. And during the same timeframe, southbound I-35E will be closed from University Avenue to I-494.

Starting Monday, vehicle lanes on the Washington Avenue Bridge between the University of Minnesota and downtown Minneapolis will be closed through Aug. 8 for general maintenance.

The bike and pedestrian paths on the upper level of the double-decker bridge will remain open and Green Line light-rail service won’t be affected, officials with Hennepin County Transportation said.
