More details given for Sunfish Lake deer hunt

The tiny city of Sunfish Lake has ironed out the details for its city-wide deer hunt, the first to be conducted during the regular deer hunting season in about seven years.

To curtail the population of more than 50 deer reported to have been seen around the 1.7-square-mile community, the City Council recently approved an ordinance amendment allowing deer hunting.

At the last council meeting, members approved an agreement with the Metro Bowhunters Resource Base, a hunting group that works with towns to reduce their deer populations.

Hunting will be done by bow and arrow. Only members of the Metro Bowhunters will be allowed to hunt. Hunting will only occur up to three days per week and can only be done in Musser Park and private lands deemed suitable by the city's liaisons to the Metro Bowhunters and where the owner has given permission.

No more than 25 deer can be taken, and they must be antlerless.

There are several dates on which hunting will not be allowed, such as Halloween and Thanksgiving.

No hunting can occur within 200 feet of a driveway, road, parcel boundary or residence unless the adjoining landowner consents to a lesser restriction.

If you have any questions about the deer hunt, contact councilman Richard Williams at 651-554-1201 or West St. Paul police officer Matt Muellner at 651-552-4200.
