More Deep South Downpours Sunday

July 16, 2011 at 8:13PM

A most helpful, welcome break in the drought and heat has happened in theDeep South this week, and there will be more of the same in the region throughthe start of the week.Beaufort, S.C. (5.34 inches); Florala, Ala., (4.34 inches); Orlando, Fl. (3.92inches); and New Orleans (2.50): all are outstanding instances of high 24-hourrainfall registered since Thursday.

Lesser-known sites reached or even exceeded these amounts.

Along with the downpours came a break on the continuous 90-degree daytimes, ashighs on Friday and Saturday were in the 80s in a wide area as far west asLouisiana.

Through at least Monday, weak low pressure tied to a late-week cold front willspark further bouts of drenching hit-or-miss downpours in the Deep South fromGeorgia and Florida westward into Texas.

While it is true that the cloudbursts have caused some flooding headaches, itis clear that, among their benefits have been, and will continue to be, badlyneeded relief from stubborn drought.
