...more Bachmann presidential tea leaves, Friday edition

Could she win the Iowa caucuses? Is she not ready for prime time in South Carolina?

Michele (I-haven't-decided-whether-to-run-for-president) Bachmann got more ink this week about the likelihood and plausibility of such a run.

A New Republic piece calls her "a serious contender for 2012" and asserts that she'd fare far better in the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses than Sarah Palin, who the magazine terms Bachmann's "doppelganger." The story also says she could pose "a deadly threat" to former Gov. Tim Pawlenty's prospects in Iowa, largely because of her potentially vast appeal among religious conservatives who dominate the ranks of GOP caucusgoers.

The whole thing, headlined "Springtime for Bachmann" (get it, Mel Brooks fans?) can be read here.

On the other hand, Politico published a story Friday from South Carolina, site of the first southern primary of the presidential campaign. It's a bucket of cold water, reporting that party activists largely see Bachmann as "Sarah Palin light," and that many think it's premature for her to make the plunge. According to one, "Michele, in years to come, she'll be a strong candidate — but not now."

The dispatch can be read here.
