Monsoon, Tropics Combine for Trouble

May 23, 2009 at 1:25PM

As the South West Monsoon continues its gradual northwest progression thisweekend, an area of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal will potentially developinto a tropical cyclone.Environment conditions appear favorable for this low to develop into atropical depression or even a tropical cyclone by Monday. The steering flowwould take this low to the northeast, toward the border of Myanmar andBangladesh.

Regardless if this low develops into a tropical feature or not, it will drawvery moist, tropical air northward, resulting in cloud bursts across northeastIndia, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Widespread flooding is expected in these areas, especially late in the weekend and into early next week. Strong, gusty windswill also accompany the cloud bursts.

It was only 1 year ago during the beginning of May when Myanmar wasdevastated by Cyclone Nargis. During the middle of April, this region wasimpacted by Cyclone Bijli, the first cyclone of the 2009 Indian Oceanseason.
