Twin Cities supermarkets Lunds and Byerly's have pulled Sparboe Farms eggs from their stores after the egg producer was the subject of an undercover video about animal abuse, Mike Hughlett reports. They join Target, which on Friday opted to pull Sparboe Farms eggs from its stores nationwide. Thanksgiving chefs who need eggs for their Turkey Day dishes don't need to worry. While there's a temporary crimp on supplies at some stores, eggs are generally available throughout the Twin Cities.
A Minnesota Target employee will help today to deliver a petition to Target Corp. headquarters in Minneapolis asking the retailer to drop its plans to open at midnight on Black Friday. An Omaha worker launched the petition through www.change.org. It nows has more than 190,000 signatures.
In Sunday's paper, Eric Roper revealed the largest investor in Block E, the site proposed for the state's first non-tribal casino. Irv Kessler is one of 11 mostly local investors who bought Block E for $14 million last year.
Roper is also going for a record for liquor-related stories. He and Steve Brandt reported that the end of last week marked a revival of the brewing industry in Minneapolis. Mayor Rybak drank a pint Friday hours after the City Council voted to loosen local liquor laws that separate church and spirits.
Matt McKinney is going for a record of his own with towing-related stories. He wrote Saturday that signs posted at downtown Minneapolis parking lots warn drivers that if they park illegally, they'll be towed at a cost of up to $280, but the charges aren't legal, according to city rules. A Minneapolis ordinance caps rates at $212.
Public safety: Before 4 a.m. today, a man was stabbed to death in the Warehouse District, Paul Walsh writes. I wrote today that the male passenger that was shot to death inside of a car near the intersection of Plymouth and Washington avenues Saturday night was identified. The female driver was still in critical condition on Sunday. There were also two weekend Occupy MN protest arrests at a foreclosed home in Minneapolis. Here's the video that Occupy MN protesters took.
