MnPass reaches a milestone

October 20, 2010 at 3:33AM

The metro area hit a milestone this week when Kim Iacarella of Burnsville and Kathi Moter of Plymouth signed up for access to the MnPass express lanes.

The two new customers pushed the number of solo drivers paying to use the metro area's high-occupancy lanes past 20,000 (to 20,001, to be exact).

A MnPass account allows solo drivers to use the express lanes on Interstates 394 and 35W. Carpools, motorcycles and transit buses can use the lanes for free.

Here's a look at the numbers:

2 freeways using MnPass: I-394 and I-35W

14,500 transponders used mostly on I-394

5,500 transponders used mostly on I-35W

$15 in toll credits for any new account opened before Dec. 31. (It won't work to close your account and open a new one.)

$1.50 monthly cost of the transponder. Fees for using the lanes depend the traffic load at the time.

10 MINUTES to sign up online at www.mnpass.org. Or call 1-866-EZ-RIDE4 (1-866-397-4334).
