Recently signed striker Ramon Abila, who scored his first MLS goal as the game-winner for Minnesota United on Wednesday, is the team's highest-paid player in total compensation.
Abila's base salary for the 2021 season is $800,000 while his guaranteed compensation that includes his base salary and all signing and guaranteed bonuses over the term of his contract is $1.1 million.
The figures, released Thursday by the MLS Players Association, reflect how the team went on a veritable spending spree in its fifth MLS season.
Star midfielder and designated player Emanuel Reynoso will earn $750,000 base salary and $966,910 guaranteed compensation.
Newcomer Wil Trapp will earn a straight $747,500. Starting right back Romain Metanire's new contract reached late last season pays him $600,000 salary and $699,250 guaranteed compensation.
Two-time MLS Defender of the Year Ike Opara signed a big, new contract after the 2019 season. He has played just two games since then because of an injury/situation the Loons call "undisclosed" for a player who has had a history of concussions. The club tried to negotiate a contract settlement before last month's season opener that would have allowed it to use his salary to acquire new players under their salary charge, but none was reached.
Opara, the Loons' eighth-highest player, has a 2021 salary of $600,000, his total compensation $685,333. He has trained individually at the team's Blaine facility.
When asked Friday for an update on Opara situation, coach Adrian Heath said, "I've left that with the club to sort out. I don't know."
