Mixed reviews on duck season changes

MIXED REVIEWS ON DUCK SEASON CHANGES

Major changes coming for the 2011 Minnesota duck hunting season get mixed reviews, according to an unscientific poll of Star Tribune readers last week. Only two of five major changes garnered majority support.

Here are the results:

57 percent support

Ø Opening the duck season a half-hour before sunrise on the opener, instead of 9 a.m. Forty-two percent of the 623 voters opposed.

Ø Starting the duck season on

Sept. 24, a week earlier than normal. Forty-two percent of the 481 voters opposed.

55 percent oppose

Ø Increasing the wood duck bag limit from two to three. Forty-four percent of the 357 voters support.

64 percent oppose

Ø Increasing the mallard hen harvest from one to two. Thirty-five percent of the 553 voters support.

84 percent oppose

Ø Holding Youth Waterfowl Day on Sept. 10, a week earlier than it's been held in the past. Fifteen percent of the 321 voters support.
