Barbecue

Opens Friday: A cookout is the setting — and an apt metaphor — for playwright Robert O'Hara's scorching sendup of black and white stereotypes. The action starts at a family barbecue fueled by beer, drugs and whiskey. In this tightrope of a play — it could fail spectacularly — O'Hara also deals with cultural appropriation. The play is getting big productions across the country. Thomas Jones II directs Mixed Blood Theatre's season opener and acts alongside big-name Twin Cities performers Jevetta Steele, Regina Marie Williams, Sue Scott and Stephen Yoakam. (7:30 p.m. Wed.-Fri., 5 & 8 p.m. Sat., 2 p.m. Sun. Ends Oct. 16. 1501 E. 4th St., Mpls. Pay-what-you-wish or $25 for guaranteed admission. 612-338-6131 or mixedblood.com.)

FILE -- A rent deposit slot at an apartment complex in Tucker, Ga., on July 21, 2020. As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
