Divas' do's, and the guy who does 'em

Who's a bigger diva, Diana Ross or Naomi Campbell? I asked a hairstyling icon who'd know the answer on Monday at the Wayzata location of Jon Charles Salon.

"I would say Diana Ross," said Oribe, who's done them all, follically speaking -- J. Lo, Christy Turlington, Anne Hathaway, Penelope Cruz, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Miss Ross and crazy Campbell, who's demonstrated a downright criminal disdain for underlings.

"Oh yeah, definitely," said Oribe of Ross, before conceding on my video that it's a close call.

Oribe was in the metro schooling stylists about his new hair-care line. He confirmed the accuracy of a note in Wikipedia, which must be watched carefully, that credits Ross with teaching the stylist the art of anchoring a wig to a head so well it wouldn't come off while its wearer executed cartwheels. Oribe said Ross was a former hairdresser, a nugget that delighted Jon Charles.

Ross is a well-known fan of the wig. Wigs or weaves -- which does less damage to the hair? "Weaves damage," said Oribe. "Naomi Campbell ... we Crazy Glued the hair onto her hair. It can take its toll."

I don't think Crazy Glue is SOP with weaves these day, but if weaving in hair otherwise damages, is it possible that we'll soon be looking at a generation of bald black women?

"No, I don't think so," said Oribe. "I think black hair, the whole science, there are amazing things you can do with black hair. I'm always trying to talk my friend Naomi into just using wigs sometimes, giving your hair a break [from the weaves]."

In addition to weaves, it's also fascinating to see how many black women apparently always wanted to be blondes: Keri Hilson, Amerie, Rebecca Crews.

"They look great blonde," Oribe said of black women who are not born blonde (and some are). "Not white blonde, but certainly like the Jennifer Lopez blonde." Asked to name one black woman who doesn't look silly as a blonde, he said: "Nene ["Real Housewives of Atlanta"] looks amazing."

Oribe also riffed to the stylists about clients who want outrageously priced haircuts. Some people want to spend $1,300 for a haircut, but Oribe said people who want to be able to say they spent that much are the types a stylist would pay even more not to have in the chair.

We got into a lot of heads of hair during Oribe's appearance, which Jon Charles said did not cost him the going rate of $10,000 because the salon is carrying Oribe's products. But there was one set of locks about which Oribe was particularly gracious -- those on the head of Jon Charles himself.

Jon Charles' hair is a soft, sweeping spike look that's just this side of a fright wig. The salon's motto is: It's not your hair, it's our hair.

Not much. "I love his hair," Oribe said.

Jon Charles stylist Ryan Ketterling agreed: "Leave it like it is. It's like topiary."

Prince salutes Bobby ZPrince dedicated "Nothing Compares 2 U" to Bobby Z during that Madison Square Garden concert that will be remembered for how Prince booted Kim Kardashian off the stage when she declined to shake her assets.

Brooklynvegan.com quoted Prince as saying: "A lot of people helped me along the way, Bobby was one of them. Recover soon, Bobby." The Revolution drummer is trying to bounce back from a heart attack.

TMZ dusted off that photo of Prince in those lacy buttless breeches while complimenting Symbolina for kicking Kardashian to the curb. "Something magical happened," said the TMZ announcer during a segment titled, "So You Think You Can Dance With Prince? Well You Can't, So Get The Hell Off The Stage."

"She has no talent at all," said Max Hodges, TMZ's on-set surfer dude. "She's useless."

Wow. Has the tide turned viciously against the Kardashians? I'm trying to remember the last time Hodges had anything negative to say about a well-endowed woman. Not that long ago, that big butt and a smile was all Hodges needed to rhapsodize over a video clip featuring Kardashian.
