After widespread criticism, Velez apologized.

"I apologize to the people I have offended with my words. I am first and foremost an #UpStander and as such I stand up against bullying. The last thing I wanted to do was to bully anyone. Again,…" she tweeted.

The Miss Puerto Rico organization condemned her comments.

"The comments are antithetical to the morals, ethics, and principles of the Organization, and we have suspended Ms. Velez indefinitely for her offensive and inappropriate actions…." the organization tweeted.

Velez has deleted her social media accounts in the wake of the uproar against her.
