Top-ranked Minnetonka took a hit as senior forward and Gophers recruit Max Gardiner suffered a broken wrist in Tuesday's game against St. Thomas Academy.

Skippers coach Brian Urick said Gardiner is having surgery at noon today and doctors will set a timeline for Gardiner's return afterward. Doctors who treated Gardiner immediate after the injury told Urick that Gardiner would be out at least six weeks.

"But if I know Max, he'll be working his butt off to return as soon as he can," Urick said.

"In the three years I've been here this is the biggest adversity we've faced," he said. "I told the team we don't need one guy to replace him. We need everyone to pick their games up. We're trying to take whatever positives we can out of this."

Fernando Mendoza lowered his pads into a defender, spun in a full circle, used his hand to keep his balance, then launched himself horizontally and reached the ball over the goal line — an Indiana touchdown and a ready-made poster pic for a title run straight from the movies.
