Minnetonka eighth-grader Bella Lambert had the biggest victory of her high school tennis career Saturday when she upset defending Class 2A champion Summer Brills of Mounds View at the Rochester Mayo Invitational.
Lambert, the sister of two-time state champion Aria Lambert, defeated Brills, who was ranked No. 1 in Class 2A. They split the first two sets, with Lambert winning 6-4 in the first and losing 6-1 in the second. Lambert outlasted Brills 11-9 in a tiebreaker superset to win the match.
With Brills' loss, Chanhassen sophomore Hayley Haakenstad took over the No. 1 ranking in Class 2A.
Edina won the invitational with 35 points. Prior Lake was second with 23, Wayzata finished third with 21 points and Minnetonka tied with Rochester Mayo for fourth with 19.
Preiss leads Wayzata swimmers
Wayzata and Minnetonka, the top two girls' swimming teams in Class 2A, squared off at Saturday's Minnetonka Invitational. Wayzata, No. 1 in the coaches association rankings, won the meet with 676 team points. No. 2-ranked Minnetonka finished second with 582 points while a third Lake Conference team, Eden Prairie, took third with 548.
Wayzata sophomore Madison Preiss had four first-place finishes for the Trojans. Preiss won the 200 IM (in a pool and meet-record time of 2 minutes, 8.77 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke and swam on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.
Edina takes first at Maroon and Gold
Edina's girls' swimming and diving team, which earned the No. 3 ranking in the coaches poll, also had a successful Saturday.
The Hornets won the Gold Division of the Maroon and Gold Invitational at the University of Minnesota. Edina had 368 points, getting victories from Rachel Wittmer in the 200 individual medley and Olivia Anderson in the 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relay.
