Minnetonka band conductor to be feted for 50 years of music

September 23, 2012 at 12:13AM

Dan Geldert, conductor of the Music Association of Minnetonka's Concert Band, will mark his 50th year of conducting this weekend.

The concert band will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Arts Center on 7, which is connected to Minnetonka High School. The center is located at 18285 Hwy. 7, Minnetonka.

A reception honoring Geldert's achievements will follow the performance.

The concert is free, but donations to the Music Association of Minnetonka will be accepted.

Geldert started his career as student teacher at Minnetonka High School in 1961. He retired in 1997, but continued to be a substitute teacher.

He started the concert band 10 years ago even though he has lived out of state much of that time, trekking back 12 times a year to conduct rehearsals and two concerts.

Many of the 60 members of the concert band who will be performing Sunday are former students of Geldert's from Minnetonka High School.
