The Twins traded infielder Edouard Julien and reliever Pierson Ohl to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, Jan. 28, for a minor league pitcher to clear two spots on their 40-man roster.

In return for Julien and Ohl, who was designated for assignment on Jan. 23 when the Twins signed free agent reliever Taylor Rogers, the Twins received minor league pitcher Jace Kaminska.

The 24-year-old Kaminska, a 10th-round pick in the 2023 amateur draft out of Nebraska, posted a 2.78 ERA in 87⅓ innings at Class A in 2024 with 104 strikeouts and 12 walks.

Kaminska missed the 2025 season after he underwent Tommy John surgery in March.

Three years after Julien broke into the major leagues and looked like a future building block for the Twins, his time with the organization ended after his path to playing time was blocked.

Julien, 26, is out of minor league options, and he fell behind Luke Keaschall and Kody Clemens on the depth chart at second base.

Julien finished seventh in the American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2023 after he produced a .263 batting average with 16 homers, 37 RBI, 60 runs and a .381 on-base percentage. His offense helped lift the Twins to an American League Central division title, and it looked like the Twins had their answer for a long-term leadoff hitter.

The next two seasons, however, were terrible for Julien. He hit .199 across 94 games in 2024, and he batted .220 in 64 games last year, which included a demotion to Class AAA.

He struck out in nearly a third of his plate appearances, and his below-average defense became more problematic when he wasn’t hitting well.

Julien, who will play for Team Canada in March’s World Baseball Classic, joins Jose Miranda as young hitters who flashed potential over one season in the big leagues, but ultimately didn’t pan out. Miranda was released last October and he signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres.

Ohl debuted last season and recorded a 5.04 ERA in 14 appearances (three starts).

The Twins now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.
