November 30, 2013 at 3:54AM

On the first day of the girls' basketball season, two metro-area teams set a state record for most points scored in a game.

Waconia defeated St. Anthony 111-104 Friday in the Pat Paterson Tournament at Hamline University. That's 215 points, six more than Centennial and Champlin Park scored on Jan. 24, 2006, in a game the Cougars won 116-93.

Anna Schmitt scored 28 points and Madelin Dammann 20 to lead Waconia, which led 64-51 at halftime.

Breanna Bergquist scored 35 points for St. Anthony, which set a state record for points in a game for a losing team. The state record for a winning team is 129, set by New York Mills in 1977. Kelly Lawson and Bonnie Zeller each had 21 points for the Huskies.
