Minnesota Scene: Three Gophers picked for All-USCHO teams

The Gophers, the national runners-up in men's hockey, landed three players on the All-USCHO teams.

Sophomore defenseman Mike Reilly was named to the first team picked by the national college hockey website, sophomore goaltender Adam Wilcox to the second, and junior forward Kyle Rau to the third.

Reilly was the third-leading scorer for Minnesota with 33 points (nine goals, 24 assists) and was plus-19.

Wilcox had a 26-6-6 record, a 1.97 goals-against average, and a .932 save percentage. He was also a finalist for the Hobey Baker and Mike Richter awards, given to the nation's top player and goalie, respectively.

Rau scored seven goals in the last 11 games to finish with a team-high 40 points (14 goals, 26 assists).

National champion Union led all teams with four players on All-USCHO teams. St. Cloud State forward Nic Dowd was a second-team pick.

• Three men's hockey players signed with Minnesota State Mankato. They are forward Brad McClure of Penticton and defenseman Jaden Schmeisser of Victoria, two junior teams in the British Columbia Hockey League, and goalie Aaron Nelson of Bismarck of the NAHL.

• Runar Arnorsson of Hafnarfjorour, Iceland, signed with the Gophers men's golf program. He was the top-ranked golfer on the Icelandic Elite Tour in 2013 and finished second at the Icelandic Match Play Championship.

• Pitcher Sara Groenewegen of the Gophers was named one of 25 finalists for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's freshman of the year. Groenewegen, of White Rock, British Columbia, is 11-0 with a 2.35 earned-run average. She is also hitting .306 with eight homers and 29 RBI. The No. 12 Gophers play a three-game series at No. 3 Michigan, starting at 5 p.m. Friday.

• Jack Dougherty of Cottage Grove scored a goal, but the U.S. team lost 4-2 to Switzerland in its first game in the under-18 IIHF World Championship in Lappeenranta, Finland.
