July 2, 2017 at 4:35AM

Reliever Drasen Johnson worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the bottom of the ninth, lifting the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 4-3 victory over the St. Paul Saints on Saturday night. The Saints scored their runs on a three-run homer in the fifth by Kes Carter, who was signed earlier in the day. The former American Association All-Star was released by Fargo-Moorhead.

• Saints first baseman Brady Shoemaker was named the American Association Player of the Month for June. Shoemaker hit .341 with six home runs and 15 RBI in 26 games in June.

• Former Gophers rower Anna Cruse became the first Minnesota oarswoman to qualify for the U.S. national team. Cruse qualified in West Windsor, N.J., as part of the Lightweight Women's Quadruple Sculls — Union Boat Club, along with a trio of rowers from Boston University and Princeton. Cruse recently finished her senior season for the Gophers.
