Minnesota Scene: Racing commission chair's fate uncertain

June 27, 2013 at 2:28AM

Four days before his term will expire, Minnesota Racing Commission chair Jesse Overton does not know whether he will reappointed.

Overton was in the midst of a controversy at the commission last fall when two top racing commission officials, including chief veterinarian Dr. Lynn Hovda, were investigated by the state budget office. Both were later exonerated. One of them, Mary Manney, the deputy executive director, had been accused of making disparaging remarks regarding Overton.

A spokesperson for Gov. Mark Dayton said Wednesday the governor's office was "still working through the appointments process." Overton's term expires June 30.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Minnesota Management and Budget Office said that a separate investigation of Overton was not yet complete.
