Minnesota Scene: Minnesotans lead U.S. to Five Nations hockey title

Five Minnesotans combined for five goals and seven assists as the United States beat Germany 9-2 late Saturday night to finish 4-0 and win the Under-17 Five Nations hockey tournament in Dallas.

St. Paul Academy's Devlin McCabe and two goals and two assists, Grand Rapids teammates Gavin Hain (two goals) and Blake McLaughlin (goal, three assists) combined for six points, and Moorhead's Ethan Frisch and Hill-Murray's Ben Helgeson each had an assist.

Team USA, coached by Hamline's Cory Laylin, outshot the Germans 54-13 and outscored its four opponents 31-6.

McCabe and McLaughlin tied for the point lead in the round-robin tournament with 10 each. McLaughlin, who has committed to the Gophers, scored six goals and assisted on four. McCabe, who has committed to Minnesota Duluth, had four goals and six assists.

Saints signee takes loss

Jeff Shields, re-signed earlier Sunday by the Saints, gave up 10 runs (seven earned) and 11 hits as St. Paul lost 11-4 to the Sioux Falls Canaries in an American Association game at CHS Field.

Smith, a righthander, started the season with the Saints before joining Saltillo in Mexico.

• Ciaran's Prize won the $41,800 Hoist Her Flag Stakes on Sunday at Canterbury Park with jockey Orlando Mojica aboard. The 5-year-old mare is trained by Joel Berndt and is owned by James Thares of Aberdeen, S.D. Ciaran's prize returned $7.80 as the second wagering choice.

Odds-on favorite Ball and Chain faded to third, and Discreetly Grand finished second at 32-1 odds.
