Sam Matthew, a recent graduate of the University of South Dakota, made a par on the final hole Wednesday to defeat Jonathan Hanner 1 up to win the 37th MGA Players' Championship at Spring Hill Golf Club in Orono.

With the victory, Matthew became just the eighth player to win both the MGA's State Amateur and Players' Championship.

In the semifinals, Matthew beat Trent Peterson 1 up, and Hanner beat Blake Onkka 4 and 2.

• Sarah Burnham and McKenzie Neisen shot a 5-under 67 for a two-shot lead after the first day of the two-day Women's State Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Alexandria Golf Club.

Sioux City hands Saints rare loss

The St. Paul Saints lost for just the sixth time in 32 games, falling 4-2 to the Sioux City Explorers before an announced crowd of 7,792 at CHS Field.

Vinny DiFazio went 0-for-3, ending a streak of 11 straight games with two or more hits.

Former Hill-Murray standout Robert Youngdahl, who just completed his senior season at Notre Dame, went 0-for-2 in his Saints debut.
