Minnesota Scene: Many to receive awards Wednesday at History Center

The Minnesota Girls and Women in Sports Day awards ceremony will be held at noon Wednesday at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul.

Among those being presented awards are Allys Swanson of St. Catherine (Marie Berg Award for excellence in education), Greg Kleven of Sun Newspapers (Kwame McDonald Media Award), Mallory Weggemann of U.S. Paralympic Swimming (Wilma Rudolph Award for courage and inspiration) and Special Merit Awards to Ken Miller of North Country Region Volleyball, Diane Scovill of Minneapolis Community and Technical College, Carrie Tollefson of USA Olympic Track and Field and Deb Weinreis of Minnesota Recreation and Park Association. LPGA Hall of Fame member Patty Berg, a Minneapolis native, will be posthumously honored with the Minnesota Legacy Award.

Breaking Barriers Awards will be presented to 12 people.

Thrills on slopes

The Minnesota State High School Snowboarding and Freeskiing Association's championships will be held this weekend at two venues.

The schedule: halfpipe at 10:30 a.m. and slalom/giant slalom at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Buck Hill in Burnsville and slopestyle at 9:30 a.m. and rail jam at 11 a.m. Sunday at Hyland Hills in Bloomington.

About 100 competitors are expected.

• Tucker Hibbert of Pelican Rapids, Minn., finished fourth in the Snocross event at the X Games in Aspen, Colo. He had won the event nine times in the past 10 years.

• Kelly Donahue was named event experience manager for Twin Cities in Motion, which hosts 21 race events annually, including the Twin Cities Marathon.

• The Herb Brooks Foundation will donate the original Herb Brooks statue to the National Sports Center (NSC) in Blaine. The original 6-foot-tall statue, at Rice Park, adjacent to the Xcel Energy Center, was recently replaced by a larger statue. The NSC plans to relocate the original statue at the entrance to the Schwan Super Rink.

• Gophers senior defenseman Lee Stecklein is one of 15 nominees for the Hockey Humanitarian Award.

• Cami Gilson of the Gophers cleared 12 feet, 11¾ inches to finish second in the pole vault on the first day of the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
