Minnesota Scene: Lynx sign one guard, trade another

The Minnesota Lynx signed veteran guard Tan White and traded second-year guard Sugar Rodgers to the New York Liberty on Wednesday.

The 5-7 White is a guard similar to current Lynx backup Monica Wright in style. The second overall pick by Indiana in the 2005 WNBA draft, White has career averages of 8.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists. Last season was her fifth year with Connecticut.

White, 31, could work herself into a regular part of coach Cheryl Reeve's rotation, allowing Maya Moore to play more at power forward.

Rodgers, meanwhile, was part of a sign-and-trade deal with the Liberty, a trade that gave the Lynx the right to trade third-round picks with the Liberty in next year's draft.

Rodgers was the second-round pick (14th overall) of the Lynx in the 2013 draft. As a rookie, she averaged 1.9 points and 1.4 rebounds in 7.6 minutes per game.

These two moves appear to set the Lynx roster for training camp, which begins April 27.

Alyssa Goehner, a 5-11 outside hitter from Lakeville North, and two other players signed with the Gophers volleyball team on Wednesday.

She was the prepvolleyball.com national sophomore and junior of the year in 2011 and 2012 and the Star Tribune's metro player of the year twice.

Also signing with Minnesota were 6-0 Maddie Beal of Colorado Springs and Dalianliz Rasado, a 5-9 libero who is a member of Puerto Rico's youth national team.

• Forward Jake Guentzel of Woodbury as named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference rookie of the month for March and North Dakota sophomore goalie Zane Gothberg, of Thief River Falls, Minn., the player of the month for March and April. Guentzel had two goals and five assists in six games. Gothberg, had a 1.76 goals-against average in 11 games those months.

• Tom Brown, the Winona State men's basketball associate head coach, resigned to become the head coach at West Texas A&M.
