Minnesota Scene: Gophers women's soccer team loses to California-Santa Barbara on penalty kick

Amanda Ball scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute to give the California-Santa Barbara women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over the Gophers on Friday night in the Minnesota Classic at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Her goal came after a Minnesota handball on the outside of the box.

The Gophers (2-1-2) had two shots in the 90th minute, but Megan Koenig's shot was blocked and Nikki Albrecht's was saved.

• The Gophers men's cross-country team will compete in the Indiana Open on Saturday. Among the six teams in the field are three others from the Big Ten besides the Hoosiers: Illinois, Ohio State and Wisconsin, plus Miami (Ohio). … Minnesota's women's team also will be at the Indiana Open, competing against the same schools.

• Jamie Verbrugge was named the public address announcer for Gophers men's basketball. He currently handles those duties for Gophers football, men's hockey and wrestling home events.

• Junior goalie Patrick Munson, a native of Hugo who played for Centennial High School, will transfer from Denver to Michigan Tech this season and be eligible immediately.
