Gophers tight end Maxx Williams was one of eight semifinalists announced Monday for the John Mackey Award, given annually to the nation's top tight end.
Williams, a third-year sophomore from Waconia, has 25 receptions and leads all Big Ten tight ends in receiving yards (373) and receiving touchdowns (seven). He has accounted for 27.7 percent of the Gophers' receiving yards.
The other semifinalists are E.J. Bibbs (Iowa State), Evan Engram (Mississippi), Ben Koyack (Notre Dame), Jimmay Mundine (Kansas), Nick O'Leary (Florida State), Jean Sifrin (Massachusetts) and Clive Walford (Miami).
Former Gophers tight end Matt Spaeth won the Mackey Award in 2006. This year's finalists will be announced Nov. 24, with the trophy presented Dec. 11.

The gametime for the Gophers' football game at Wisconsin on Nov. 29 has been set for 2:30 p.m. That will end a string of six consecutive 11 a.m. games for the Gophers, including Saturday's game at Nebraska.

Gophers fall from top of college hockey poll
The Gophers' extended run at No. 1 in NCAA hockey ended. After being swept by in-state rival Minnesota Duluth, the Gophers fell to No. 4; Michigan Tech took over the top spot.
It's the first time Michigan Tech has been No. 1 in the USCHO poll. North Dakota and Boston University remain at No. 2 and No. 3, Massachusetts-Lowell dropped a spot to No. 5.
