Minnesota Scene: Gophers' Patrick Fredrickson named Big Ten pitcher and freshman of week

Freshman righthander Patrick Fredrickson of the Gophers was named Big Ten pitcher and freshman of the week Monday. He threw seven no-hit innings in a 17-2 victory over Penn State last Saturday.

He struck out seven in 7⅓ innings and gave up one unearned run and one hit. He is 4-0 with a 1.48 ERA this season.

• The Gophers baseball team will try to play Augsburg at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Siebert Field in its home opener. Four previously scheduled games there have been canceled or postponed.

Lizak honored

Junior Ethan Lizak, who finished fourth at 125 pounds in the NCAA meet, was named the Gophers' outstanding wrestler at the team's awards banquet Sunday.

Jake Short, Chris Pfarr and Nate Wanzek shared the leadership award and Brandon Krone was tabbed as most improved.

Mitch McKee received awards for most falls (nine) and being the most exciting wrestler.

• Gophers senior Caroline Ryba was named the co-Big Ten player of the week in women's tennis. She went 4-0 last week, winning twice in single and twice in doubles with River Hart.

• Gymnast Garrett Kasiski of Chesapeake, Va., signed with the Gophers. He was second in floor exercise and third in all-around in the Junior Olympics national meet.
