Minnesota Scene: Five-time Top Fuel champion Brown leads qualifiers for BIR finals

Top Fuel driver Antron Brown raced to his third No. 1 qualifying position of the season Saturday at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.

John Force topped the Funny Car field, and Allen Johnson led in Pro Stock.

Brown, a five-time winner this year, had a 3.810-second run at 318.77 mph in his Don Schumacher Racing dragster.

Force powered to his fifth No. 1 qualifying position of the season and 151st of his career in Funny Car (4.060, 315.27). The 11-time Brainerd winner will face Bob Bode in the opening round.

In Pro Stock, Johnson claimed his fifth No. 1 of the season and 36th of his career with his Friday run of 6.614 at 207.98 in his Dodge Dart.

Roysland lands job

Former Gophers basketball assistant Kelly Roysland will be the next women's basketball coach at Macalester College. The official announcement will come on Monday.

Roysland, of Fosston, Minn., played for the Gophers from 2004-07. After graduating from Minnesota, she was an assistant coach at North Dakota State University for two years before returning to the Gophers in 2010.

Roysland was not retained by new Gophers coach Marlene Stollings.

At Macalester, Roysland will replace Ellen Thompson, who resigned last month after nine seasons. The Scots were 5-20 last season.

• Jeremy Martin, of Millville, Minn., clinched the 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship in the 250cc class by placing second in the opening moto in Crawfordsville, Ind.

• The New Jersey Jackals beat the St. Paul Saints 6-1 at Midway Stadium. Earlier, the Saints made six roster moves. They signed catcher Vinny DiFazio and former University of St. Thomas infielder Tyler Peterson and activated pitcher Jeff Shields. The Saints also traded two players, utility player Jared McDonald to Wichita and catcher Dwight Childs to the Jackals, and placed infielder Sam Maus on the inactive list.
