Minnesota scene: Eden Prairie, Burnsville win opener in Legion regional

Eden Prairie and Burnsville both won Thursday on the first day of the American Legion Central Plains Regional in Fargo, N.D.

Eden Prairie scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Rapid City, S.D., 5-2. Burnsville won 7-3 over Fargo, the host team.

Cody Wetmore, who walked and scored in the first inning, got Eden Prairie's late rally started with a double. RBI singles by Kent Curran, Jack Claeys and Joshua Wassenaar gave Eden Prairie a 4-2 lead. The final run of the eighth scored on a groundout. Reliever Christopher Choles pitched 2⅓ scoreless innings for the victory.

Aaron Rozek scattered nine hits and struck out eight for Burnsville in a complete-game win. Teammate Bo Hellquist was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored

Four on national team

Four players from Minnesota were chosen for the USA Hockey Under-18 national development team Thursday. On the 22-player roster will be defensemen Ryan Collins of Bloomington, Jack Glover of Golden Valley and Jack Dougherty of Cottage Grove and forward Shane Gersich of Chaska.

• Coon Rapids/Andover will play Urbandale, Iowa, at noon Friday in Indianapolis in the championship game of the Little League Midwest Regional. It will be televised on ESPN.

• The visiting St. Paul Saints routed Fargo-Moorhead 16-0, tying a franchise record for margin of victory and breaking a five-game losing streak. Willie Cabrera had a three-run homer and Don Blunt a two-run shot.
