Minnesota Scene: Augustana QB among nine candidates for Harlon Hill Award

Augustana quarterback Trey Heid was named one of nine finalists Wednesday for the Harlon Hill Award, given annually to the top player in Division II football.

Heid, a 6-2, 199-pound senior from Lakeville, was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after leading the Vikings to an 8-3 record.

He led the NSIC and set an Augustana single-season record with 3,582 passing yards this season while throwing for a league-high and single-season record 41 touchdowns.

U volleyball up to No. 1 in coaches' poll

The Gophers volleyball team moved up to No. 1 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association's poll this week after five-set wins over Nebraska and Wisconsin last week. Those two Big Ten teams are second and third, respectively. Senior outside hitter Sarah Wilhite was named the AVCA's National Player of the Week after her combined 42 kills in those two big matches.

• Defender Rashida Beal, forward Simone Kolander and midfielder Josee Stiever of the Gophers soccer team were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Great Lakes Region first team. All are seniors.

• Gophers junior center Kelly Pannek of Plymouth was named the WCHA's Offensive Player of the Week. She had three goals and four assists as Minnesota swept Bemidji State last weekend. Pannek leads the NCAA with 32 points and 24 assists.

• The Gophers women's track and field and cross-country program announced the signing of nine athletes, including five Minnesotans: long jumper Allison Gerads, Champlin Park; thrower Alexis Hurst, Armstrong; and distance runners Elizabeth Klecker, Hopkins; Anastasia Korzenowski, Chanhassen, and Sophie Schmitz, Willmar.
