In the first three series of the WNBA playoffs, the teams trailing 0-1 rebounded with victories.

The Lynx found a way to not make it four.

After looking discombobulated at times during the first half, and trailing 63-49 through three quarters, Minnesota orchestrated a furious fourth quarter comeback to win 75-74 at the SAP Center in San Jose.

They played better in the third, when Bridget Carleton opened the second half with consecutive three-pointers. But Golden State still won the quarter 22-21.

However, that was a hint of what was to come.

The Lynx finally made stops in the final 10 minutes. They finally got open looks. And they buried them.

The veterans stole the show in the fourth quarter as they turned back the expansion Valkyries amid a raucous crowd in San Jose. Kayla McBride scored eight points in the fourth quarter, Napheesa Collier scored six. DiJonai Carrington threw in a pair of three-pointers.

Courtney Williams, who was 2-for-8 from the field and so ineffective that she was on the bench until 2:57 remaining, was golden when she was needed the most. She hit a 16-footer with 29.5 seconds to play, giving the Lynx a 75-72 lead for their final points of the game.

But the Lynx defense finally played up to its pedigree with the game on the line, holding Golden State to 11 points in the fourth.

What it means

The Lynx take the series 2-0 and can watch everyone else knock themselves out in the rubber game of their series. A Game 3 seemed on tap for three quarters before last year’s WNBA finalists put their foot down and vanquished the Valkyries.

Top highlight

Collier buried a 17-foot jumper with less than five minutes left in the fourth to give the Lynx the lead for good, at 73-72.

Wacky possession

The Lynx had the ball with 24 seconds to go, leading 75-74.

Golden State had a foul to give.

It was a double head-scratcher, as the Valkyries didn’t foul and Minnesota either lost track of time or were content running the clock down.

It led to a shot clock violation.

Golden State had the ball with four seconds to play.

Former Lynx Cecilia Zandalasini missed a midrange jumper and the clock ran out.

It worked out.

Key stat

The Lynx outscored Golden State 26-11 in the fourth quarter. Collier and McBride combined for 14 of their 41 points in the final 10 minutes.

MVP

Well, it goes to the player who should win the WNBA MVP award.

Collier was frequently double-teamed in the first half and struggled to impact the game as the Lynx fell behind by as many as 17 points. But, when the smoke cleared, Collier had 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Up next

The Lynx get to chill and watch the defending champion New York Liberty face off against an Alyssa Thomas-led Phoenix team on Friday in Game 3.

The winner comes to Minnesota on Sunday for Game 1 of the semifinals.
