Triple J Family Farms, of Buffalo is recalling about 15,270 pounds of bone-in ribeye products because they may contain parts of the vertebral column, according to a statement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
As a precautionary measure, regulations require the removal of the material in meat cut from cattle 30 month of age or older, the USDA said. The vertebral tissue of older cattle infected with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy has the potential to cause illness in humans. No cattle slaughtered displayed any sign of BSE.
The problem was discovered during a routine inspection and may have been a result of a recent change in "the company's carcass separation practices," the USDA said.
The products subject to recall have an establishment number of EST. 17466. The number is found inside the USDA symbol. The products were packaged between Feb. 8 and March. 21, 2013 and were sent to New York for further processing. Other identifying information can be found here.
