Residents are being invited to take part in the 7th annual event to clean up Minnehaha Creek and nearby lakes Sunday.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., with buses leaving at 9:30 to go to clean up locations along the creek and chain of lakes.

Volunteers should meet at Lake Hiawatha Park, E. 46th Street and 28th Avenue S. They'll return to the lake by 11:30 for a free lunch, followed by prizes.

The event is sponsored by the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company's "Canoes for a Cause" campaign and Metro Blooms.

"It's a real hands-on opportunity for people to help clean up these resources," said Telly Mamayek, spokeswoman for the creek district. "This is promising to be our biggest cleanup yet. We're expecting about 1,000 people, which is nearly twice what we had last year."

Mamayek said in addition to trash, volunteers will be picking up brush from the recent storm. They'll be piling up the debris to make it easier for crews.
