Minneapolis west metropolitan news briefs: Bloomington's Old Cedar Avenue Bridge gets historic designation

The Long Meadow Lake Bridge, better known locally as the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge, has earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. The listing comes after a request from the Bloomington Historical Society.

The bridge is a 1920 camelback steel-truss structure that is now rare in Minnesota. It has been closed since 2002 and has been the focus of a long-running disagreement between the city of Bloomington and bikers, walkers and nature-­lovers about whether it should be renovated or replaced.

The listing makes it very unlikely the bridge would be torn down but does not guarantee its renovation. However, renovation appears likely with a $9 million provision for the bridge in this year's state tax law.

Eight inspirational gardens will be open to visitors on Sunday, June 30, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the Edina/Morningside Garden Tour in a benefit for the Girl Scouts.

The tour, which features gardens that are mostly within a block or two of each other, will be held rain or shine with proceeds going to the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys.

Advance tickets are $10 and will be sold through Saturday, June 29, at Yardware, 3545 W. 44th St. in Minneapolis. On the day of the tour, tickets are $15 and maps will be available outside of Golden Years Montessori School, 4100 W. 42nd St. in Edina. Children 12 and under are free.

The event is in the Fireside Room in the lower level of the library. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

The First Regiment Minnesota Volunteer Infantry group was the first volunteer regiment offered in service to President Abraham Lincoln after the fall of Fort Sumter in 1861.

The reading is sponsored by Friends of the Edina Library, the Edina Community Foundation, Edina Senior Center, Friends of the Hennepin County Library, Edina High School, Edina Community Education and Edina Resource Center, and the League of Women Voters Edina.

The Charles H. Burwell House has started tours and will continue offering them throughout the summer.

The house, located at 13209 E. McGinty Rd. in Minnetonka, is listed on the National Register of Historic and is owned and operated by the city. The 2013 tour season began June 8 and will continue through Aug. 31. Tours are available noon-3 p.m. Tuesdays, 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays (except for July 3) and noon-4 p.m. on Saturdays (except June 29). In September, the house will be open on Saturdays only.

The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District is seeking volunteers to help with the seventh annual Minnehaha Creek cleanup on Sunday, June 30.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Lake Hiawatha Park off 46th Street and 28th Avenue S. It will be hosted by the Watershed District, Metro Blooms and the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co.'s "Canoes for a Cause" campaign.

Registration and a free bagel breakfast begins at 9 a.m. Buses will leave at 9:30 a.m. to take volunteers to locations along the creek and the Chain of Lakes. A free BBQ lunch provided by Leinenkugel's will take place at 11 a.m. at Lake Hiawatha and will include prizes for children and adults.

Bradford Kissell's infrared photography will be on display at the Hopkins Center for the Arts through July 28.

There are 32 images in the show, which will be featured on both levels of the Center's Lobby Gallery.

The exhibit is open to the public anytime the building is open, generally from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.

The Hopkins Center for the Arts is located at 1111 Mainstreet in Hopkins.

The city's three fire stations and police station are open to the public Wednesday, June 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the city's annual public safety open house.

Residents can tour jail cells, watch a demonstration by Hennepin County's K-9 unit and get information about everything from the bike patrol to police investigations and crime prevention at the police station.

The police station and Fire Station 1 are at 7800 Golden Valley Rd. Fire Station 2 is at 400 Turner's Crossroad and Fire Station 3 is at 3700 Golden Valley Rd.

Family activities are the focus of the annual Golden Valley Fire Relief Association Street Dance from 5 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, June 22, at the Chester Bird American Legion at Hwy. 100 and Glenwood Av.

Activities at the free event include food, a DJ for the kids from 5 to 7:30 p.m., live music from 8 p.m. to midnight and fireworks at dusk.

Golden Valley needs more firefighters who can respond to calls during working hours.

Eight city firefighters are "Corporate Call" responders, meaning their employers in Golden Valley allow them to respond to fire calls during the workday.

Golden Valley firefighters must be at least 18 years old, have a driver's license, live or work within six minutes of a Golden Valley fire station, and have a high school diploma or equivalency.
