A suspected drunken driver rammed a Minneapolis police cruiser head-on early Saturday, severely damaging both vehicles before surrendering to authorities.

No one was injured during the incident in Minneapolis' Phillips neighborhood, where officers had responded to call about a person with a gun. After investigating the possible fight, officers returned to their car on the 2700 block of 18th Avenue S.

As they walked toward the vehicle, a suspected drunken driver heading north on 18th Avenue slammed into the squad car, said police spokeswoman Sgt. Catherine Michal. The driver, a 27-year-old Minneapolis woman, was booked on probable cause DWI at Hennepin County jail after refusing a breathalyzer test. Other charges are possible.

"There was room for this car to get by [the squad], but due to her being impaired, she hit the car head on," Michal said.

Both vehicles sustained severe front-end damage and were impounded.
