The city of Minneapolis will receive $700,000 as part of a settlement reached with the designers of a memorial built to honor the victims of the 35W bridge collapse.
The memorial, completed in 2011 at the corner of 11th Av. S. and W. River Pkwy., features 13 steel-and-glass beams — one for each person killed in the collapse. Behind the beams is a black granite wall inscribed with the names of the survivors, which was supposed to be covered by flowing water.
Minneapolis sued Oslund and Associates in 2015, alleging problems that kept the water from flowing without causing soil erosion to the Mississippi River bluff behind the memorial.
The city sued Oslund and Associates, but subcontractors also were involved. All the firms denied liability.
The parties went to mediation in September and negotiated the settlement, which was ratified in November. The agreement does not identify which parties are contributing money.
