Summer arrives in the Twin Cities just as the sculpture garden gates fly wide open.

Today the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden officially announced a reopening date of June 3, 2017, at 12 p.m. noon with a ribbon cutting ceremony, music, performance, tours, artmaking and free ice cream on a hot summer day.The announcement comes from the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board and the Walker Art Center.

Of the 18 new artworks, visitors will find six commissioned works—by artists Nairy Baghramian (Iran), Frank Big Bear (US), Theaster Gates (US), Mark Manders (The Netherlands), Philippe Parreno (France), and Aaron Spangler (US)—to join works by Tony Cragg, Sam Durant, Katharina Fritsch, Gary Hume, Robert Indiana, Kcho, Liz Larner, Sol LeWitt, Matthew Monahan, Eva Rothschild, Kiki Smith, and Monika Sosnowska. The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is located at 726 Vineland Place, Minneapolis, and will be open daily from 6 a.m. - midnight.

Here are the opening event highlights:

June 3, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12 noon. (free and open to the public)

There will be an outdoor performance of Merce Cunningham's Field Dances with dancers from the local community, as part of the "Merce Cunningham: Common Time" exhibition. For complete details, go here.

  • Performance: Black Market Brass, 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
  • Performance: Merce Cunningham's Field Dances, 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.
  • Official Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony: 12 noon
  • Activity: Extrapolation Factory, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Art-Making: Mix Up with Carolyn Swiszsz, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Music: DJ Mica Grimm, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Music: DJ Los Boogie, 3 – 6 p.m.
  • Tours: every 30 minutes, or new mobile tour available
  • Free tree seedlings from the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (while supplies last)
  • Free Blue Bunny ice cream
  • Food available in Esker Grove, Walker Dog House, and a variety of food trucks
