Minneapolis school board seeks candidates for vacancy

Are you a Minneapolis resident interested in helping govern the state's third-largest school district, overseeing a $690 million budget and the education of more than 33,000 students?

If so, the eight-member Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Education is accepting applications. Resumes and a letter of interest are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2.

The new member will replace board member Lydia Lee, who plans to resign effective Dec. 31.

The part-time job pays $13,800 per year, but proceed with caution: board members past and present say the position is demanding and time-consuming. Here's a copy of a Star Tribune story about the demands of school board service.

After ranking the applicants and conducting interviews, school board members will select Lee's successor during their Dec. 20 meeting. The new board member will be sworn in at the January 10, 2012, meeting and serve the remainder of Lee's term, which expires in January 2013.

Candidates interested in serving beyond January 2013 must run for election in 2012, beginning with the primary next August.
