Smartphone users now can send anonymous tips to the Minneapolis police and even hold an anonymous conversation with an investigator, the department announced.
Using a smartphone app called "MPD tip," owners of both Androids and iPhones can send in information about criminal activity they may know about. The MPD tip app is free and available now.
The app is one of two new ways the police hope to gather tips from the community.
The other, TIP 411, uses texting. To use it, type "MPD," a space and then the tip. Send it to 847 411 (Tip 411).
In both systems, investigators can respond to tipsters, if necessary.
The new app and text number do not collect a user's phone number, IP address or e-mail address. Each tip gets assigned a six-digit number that the department uses to manage the information.
The new service does not replace 911 or 311. In an emergency, use 911. To report livability issues or access city departments, call 311.
