Police are searching for the driver of vehicle who ran from a crash stemming from a pursuit early Wednesday in north Minneapolis.

Officers responding to a shots fired call just before 2 a.m. attempted to stop a vehicle seen leaving the area of the 2600 block of Lyndale Avenue N. where the city's ShotSpotter system indicated shots had been fired.

The driver sped away and police chased the vehicle for about 2 minutes until officers lost sight of the car and called off the pursuit, said Sgt. Catherine Michal of the Minneapolis Police Department.

A short time later officers came across a vehicle that had crashed and struck a tree at Webber Parkway and Dupont Avenue N. near Webber Park. The driver took off on foot. A State Patrol helicopter and police K-9 dogs were brought in to search for the driver without success, Michal said.

A man who was riding in the vehicle was trapped in the car. He was taken to North Memorial Medical Center with noncritical injuries, Michal said.

Officers found two handguns at the crash scene, Michal said.

The passenger will be booked into jail on probable cause of weapons possession when he is released from the hospital, Michal said.
