Tom Lachermeier, who teaches 10th-graders world history at North Community High School, has been named the 2014 High School Teacher of the Year by the Minnesota Council for Social Studies.

Lachermeier, a teacher at North since 2012 and in Minneapolis public schools since 2004, has been a leader in developing school partnerships with organizations such as the Minnesota Historical Society, the district said in a news release.

At North, and in previous positions at Roosevelt High and Anwatin Middle schools, Lachermeier developed History Day programs. In addition, his students have participated in a partnership project with African American Registry.

"It is evident in his classroom that he is well-respected and trusted by students," said North High Principal Shawn Harris-Berry. Chris Taylor, diversity outreach program manager at the Minnesota Historical Society, said, "Tom is one of the best teachers I have had the opportunity to work with."

Lachermeier will be honored March 2 at the Sheraton Bloomington.
