Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges said Wednesday that she backs federal housing authorities' plan to tighten requirements for housing money in an effort to prevent segregation.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's rule change will add scrutiny to the way communities administer federal housing money, to ensure they comply with the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The agency will provide mapping and data tracking tools to communities so they can better assess if they are making strides in desegregation -- an effort that is required for communities receiving funds.
In a statement, the mayor said the increased focus on fair housing is in line with the priorities of her office and the city and provide "the new tools we need to help combat the housing disparities we have long struggled to overcome."
The rule becomes final in 30 days, and enforcement will be phased in over time.
