Regis L. Welsh, 28, of Minneapolis, was charged Tuesday with criminal vehicular homicide in connection with a crash Friday that killed another driver.

Welsh is still being treated for his injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center, and no court date has been set.

Authorities said he had been drinking when he drove "well above the speed limit on a residential street" and crashed into a vehicle driven by Lisa Esping, 55. The crash happened about 6:30 p.m. Friday at 29th and Newton avenues N., about a block and a half from Esping's home.

Welsh hit Esping's car so hard that it went airborne and crashed into a tree, the county attorney's office said. Welsh fled on foot but returned to the scene while police were talking to witnesses. He smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech when he was arrested, the charges said. A search warrant was obtained to take a blood sample for toxicology tests.

If convicted, Welsh faces a possible prison sentence of four years, according to state sentencing guidelines.

Esping lived with her mother and had three children and three grandchildren. She was on her way to pick up one of her sons at the time of the crash.
