A gunshot to the head from a drive-by shooter is what killed a teenager as he sat in a car with a baby and others during the day last week near a north Minneapolis park, authorities said Sunday.

Tyrone D. Rice Jr., 16, of Minneapolis, was identified by the Hennepin County medical examiner's office as the victim of the shooting early Thursday afternoon near the corner of Lyndale and 27th avenues N.

The others in the car — the baby boy, a 15-year-old boy and a 27-year-old woman — were unharmed, said police spokesman John Elder. Rice was taken to North Memorial Medical Center and died the next day.

No arrests have been made.

Rice is the city's 38th homicide victim this year.

It was not clear whether the shooting was connected to a homicide less than 24 hours earlier in which a 19-year-old was shot after getting off a bus outside a north Minneapolis church. The shootings are the latest in a series of episodes in a year in which violent crime in the city has reached levels not seen in nearly a decade.

Police Chief Janeé Harteau said in a statement following Rice's death, "People are using guns in the heat of the moment to settle their personal disputes, making it virtually impossible for police to predict or prevent these acts."
