1Washburn after Jones: While Washburn traditionally has been the conference powerhouse, a 14th consecutive title might not be as clear cut. The Millers graduated 95 percent of their touchdowns and points from last season, much of them scored by 2013 Mr. Football Jeff Jones. They return just three offensive and four defensive starters.
2Edison goes green: The Tommies get no home games this year as their stadium undergoes renovations. The football field and track are being upgraded and should be ready next year. Most of the construction — removing and replacing the goal posts and bleachers, replacing the grass and installing drain tiles for a new irrigation system — is completed. But the sod still needs to take root. Other potential additions include a plaza-style entrance to the field, additional parking, practice field expansion and an outbuilding for tickets and concessions. It's a joint effort between the city of Minneapolis, Mississippi Watershed Management Organization and the Vikings. Revamps are possible at three more conference schools.
3 Mississippi transplant: Henry will start a new middle linebacker who has developed his skills in the football-rich South. He's Cory Dixon, a transfer from Mississippi school Yazoo City, where he started varsity as a sophomore. The 6-3, 215-pound junior has Division I potential, Patriots coach Mark Heiser said.
