Millions of migrant birds come to Minnesota via Mississippi flyway

It is one of four major migration routes north to south

There are four major flyways in North America, paths birds follow in spring / fall migration. They are shown on this map. Minnesota is outlined for easier viewing. The symbols represent waterfowl, but flyways accommodate bird migrants of all species. You can see that we are on the western edge of the Mississippi flyway, birds following the Mississippi River to our southern border, some coming north, others branching east as they head north along both sides of Hudson's Bay, most going west.

(The map was prepared by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, and reprinted in the March-April edition of "Refuge Update," publication of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.)
